ITEM# CRYSTAL-Emerald-0001

This is a display cabinet size (4" x 3" x 2.5")  1 lb example with numerous emerald crystals, from the source considered to be the finest in the world, Muzo Mine, Columbia.  The emerald crystals occur in seams of whitish calcite in a dark grey shale. Occasionally, crystals of pyrite occur with it making it an even more attractive display piece.

Emerald is a variety of the mineral beryl (Be3Al2(SiO3)6) colored green by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium.   Most emeralds are highly included, so their toughness (resistance to breakage) is classified as generally poor.

Emerald is the green variety of beryl, and its most precious and valuable variety. Its intense green color has given it status as an important gemstone throughout the centuries. The color of Emerald is green to emerald-green. The light green form of beryl is not recognized as emerald, but rather green beryl.  The deep color of Emerald is caused by traces of the element chromium, but sometimes also vanadium.

The ancient source of Emeralds in the old world was from Egypt, but their quality was not exceptional. However, the Native South American civilizations such as the Incas have had high quality Emeralds from the mines of Colombia, which have traditionally produced the highest quality Emeralds and continue doing so.

Emeralds can be transparent and gemmy, in which case they are extremely valuable, or they can be in opaque or semi-opaque forms which are much more common and not as valuable.

Emerald often crystallizes in perfect, six-sided hexagons. Crystals are usually as individual prismatic hexagons. Less commonly in short, stubby crystals and crystal plates. The bases of Beryl crystals are usually flat; pyramidal terminations are very  rare.

This specimen features a 1.5 cm long gemmy emerald crystal nestled close to a clusters of pyrite, plus several other crystals, all in the unique Muzo blue-green. This is the ultimate "type" specimen for the true emerald collector, and of a large size that will not disappear on your display shelf next to your other specimens - like so many other examples. Great chance to get a rare display specimen from a famous locality no longer producing specimens of this quality.
