ITEM# MINERAL-Cavansite-0001

Beautiful Cavansite specimen from Poona, India.  There are a number of small stilbite crystals on this specimen.

Cavansite, whose name is derived from its chemical composition, calcium vanadium silicate, is a deep blue hydrous calcium vanadium phyllosilicate mineral, occurring as a secondary mineral in basaltic and andesitic rocks along with a variety of seolite minerals. Discovered in 1960 in Malheur County, Oregon, cavansite is a relatively rare mineral. It is polymorphic with the even rarer mineral, pentagonite. It is most frequently found in Poona, India and in the Deccan Traps, a large igneous province.

Cavansite is a distinctive mineral. It tends to form crystal aggregates, generally in the form of balls, up to a couple centimeters in size. Sometimes the balls are coarse enough to allow the individual crystals to be seen. Rarely, cavansite forms bowtie shaped aggregates. The color of cavansite is distinctive, almost always a rich, bright blue. The color is the same as its dimorph, pentagonite, but the latter is generally much more spikey with bladed crystals. Finally, the associated minerals are useful for identification, as cavansite is frequently found sitting atop a matrix of zeolites or apophyllites.

Stilbite is the name of a series of tectosilicate minerals of the zeolite group. Prior to 1997, stilbite was recognized as a mineral species, but a reclassification in 1997 by the International Mineralogical Association changed it to a series name, with the mineral species being named:

Stilbite-Ca, by far the more common of the two, is a hydrous calcium sodium and aluminium silicate, NaCa4(Si27Al9)O72ยท28(H2O). In the case of stilbite-Na, sodium dominates over calcium. The species are visually indistinguishable, and the series name stilbite is still used whenever testing has not been performed.

At one time heulandite and stilbite were considered to be identical minerals. After they were found to be two separate species, in 1818, the name desmine ("a bundle") was proposed for stilbite, and this name is still employed in Germany. The English name "stilbite" is from the Greek stilbein = to shine, because of the pearly luster of the faces.

Crystals are typically thin tabular, flattened parallel to the dominant cleavage and elongated along the a axis. Aggregates may be sheaf-like or in bow-ties, also fibrous and globular.  Twinning, cruciform and penetration, is extremely common.

Metaphysical properties:
Cavansite is a wonderful stone for someone who wants to become a channel or connect with the spirit realm. It's strong connection to the third eye chakra allows one to develop their intuition and psychic abilities. People that are mediums, or do things such as remote viewing can also benefit from using Cavansite, because it allows one to step aside, letting the truth flow freely without doubt.

Cavansite is known to help one view their past lives, and see the lessons that you have learned. By doing this Cavansite allows one to joyfully release those lessons so that the person can move forward into the future with grace. Cavansite is also very helpful for someone to feel excited and hopeful about the future or new projects they are about to undertake.

Because of Cavansite's beautiful color blue and being associated with the throat chakra, it isn't communication, especially in written form. This stone is a great stone for writers for teachers as they can assist in one having a clear and concise communication of their intended message. Cavansite is also helpful with opening communication of one's creativity, so if you are in need of tapping into your creative side, then Cavansite may be helpful for you.

Physically Cavansite can help to stimulate the endocrine system, in particular. It works with the pituitary and pineal glands. Condensate is also helpful with migraines and headaches, in particular ones that are caused from stressful situations. This mineral has also been used to treat disorders of teeth, the blood, and disorders of the eyes.

Stilbite is a powerful mineral. It helps with psychic knowing and intuition. It is also used for psychic direction and guidance from guides, guardian angels, and totem animals. Stilbite is also a powerful stone of creativity that enhances creative energy. It heightens many physical senses, particularly taste (but as Mr Volunteer Man reminds me, the stone itself should not be eaten!) Stilbite can also help with acceptance and letting go. It is also used for manifestation. Physically, stilbite is used to remove toxins, and for laryngitis. Stilbite is associated with the heart, crown, and throat chakras.

This magnificent cavansite specimen measures approximately 5 1/2 inches long by 4 inches wide by 2 1/4 inches high.
